Abbott Academy

Abbot Academy Campus

Andover, MA

Lanie Finbury became the advocate for preservation of the former Abbot Academy campus in 1984. During the 1970s, Abbot Academy merged with Phillips Academy and fell into disuse. Lanie’s leadership efforts saved the campus from neglect and demolition. As the “turn-key” developer for Phillips Academy, Lanie’s advocacy convinced the faculty, board of trustees and the Town of Andover that the Abbot’s three historic buildings had to be preserved. Lanie pushed for a change in zoning at the annual town meeting, thereby allowing multifamily housing which ultimately saved the Academy. Lanie authored the preservation plan, put together the development team, raised money and oversaw all aspects of project management and construction. For this outstanding work, Lanie received a Preservation award from the Commonwealth of Massachusetts in 1991.
